Will the mower pass through the garden gate?

Separate cutting width from the machine’s outside dimensions before deciding whether it fits your access route.

Measure the opening the machine must use

A mower can suit the amount of grass yet fail to fit the route between shed and lawn. Walk that route without equipment first and record the narrowest clear opening. Include gate furniture, posts and other fixed projections rather than measuring only the nominal distance between the main posts. A photograph is helpful context for a retailer, but a tape measurement is the useful evidence. The real lawn-and-bed photograph illustrates how boundaries can constrain a route even in a generous-looking garden.

Ask for overall width, not only deck width

Cutting width and outside width answer different questions. The former helps describe the strip of grass addressed by a pass; the latter helps describe whether the complete machine can pass through an opening. Wheels, guards, bodywork or attachments may change the relevant outside envelope. Ask which configuration a quoted dimension describes. Do not assume that removing a part or folding a handle is permitted for moving the machine; that must come from the exact instructions.

Use clearance arithmetic as a question

In a hypothetical example, a clear opening measures 80 cm and the complete machine measures 60 cm across. The simple width difference is 20 cm, equal to 25% of the opening. A different machine measuring 70 cm leaves 10 cm, or 12.5% of that opening. Neither result is a recommended clearance. It ignores angles, uneven surfaces and the space needed by a person. The calculation only helps identify which proposal leaves less room before you seek model-specific advice.

Measure at the part of the opening where the relevant equipment actually needs to pass, and tell the seller about changing width along the route. If the route includes steps or an awkward change of level, record that as a separate unresolved constraint. A width subtraction cannot assess lifting, stability or suitability for that change of level.

Follow the whole route, including the turn

A straight gateway is not the only restriction. Record any turn immediately before or after it, and note where a fixed planter or wall narrows the path. The reel mower in the real photograph has visible wheels and a handle extending beyond its cutting mechanism; that illustrates why an entire shape matters. We have not measured that pictured machine. Husqvarna’s manufacturer buying guidance provides mower-selection context, but the exact candidate’s dimensional drawing and manual are the stronger evidence for your particular route.

Check where every component ends up

If collection equipment is part of the proposed kit, ask how it travels and where it is stored. The detached catcher in the photograph shows a component that cannot disappear from a storage plan simply because it is removable. Take the route sketch and your measurements to the seller, request the relevant dimensions in writing, and keep unresolved restrictions on the shortlist. This planning guide was reviewed on 2026-10-27. It is not an instruction to manoeuvre a powered machine through a tight passage or an assurance that a numerical clearance is safe.
